Officer shot after interrupting burglary

IRVINGTON The incident happened at a bodega located at 34 Union Avenue around 5 p.m.

The preliminary investigation indicates that two armed suspects were in the process of robbing the establishment when Detective Roman Melenka, a 24-year veteran on the force, entered the store.

One of the suspects fired his handgun striking the Melenka in the arm. The detective returned fire, striking the shooter in the chest and leg.

Melenka was treated for non-life threatening injuries at University Hospital.

The wounded suspect was pronounced at University Hospital a short time later. The other suspect fled the scene.

The shooting was captured on in-store surveillance video. The investigation is ongoing.
