Hometown Hero 10/21/2008: Luis Henriquez

Luis Henriquez
New York Despite the trend towards overly competitive youth sports currently facing our society, Luis' hallmark style of coaching instills the old-fashioned and time-honored principles of good sportsmanship and the importance of positive reinforcement.

For almost three decades, Luis has been an ever-present and driving force in several after-school and weekend sports programs. He has long been the "heart and soul" behind Big Apple Sports, a program made available to all motivated youngsters regardless of ability to pay, as the athletic youth director and senior director. Three days a week, Luis also runs a lunch-time program at P.S. 6 in Manhattan.

He is also the after school sports director at P.S. 6 in Manhattan. In both programs, kids as young as 6 years old, not only build skills and develop a love of sports, but as importantly, these are places where a child's confidence and self esteem are nurtured and developed with Luis' trademark warmth and his ever-present smile.

He is universally loved not only by parents who admire his patience and self-assured calmness, but also, by the thousands of kids who have learned sports skills and the importance of fitness and discipline.

Luis' positive impact on his community and youth across the boroughs is what makes him a Hometown Hero.
