Arrests follow deadly crash in Newark

NEWARK Police say five Newark men, ranging in age from 18 to 23, were in a stolen Audi when it struck a utility pole and a fence early Thursday at high speed.

Darryl Walker, 21, and Rafael Chavers, 18, were killed instantly after being ejected from the rear seat. Curtis Boyd, 19, and Walik Proctor, 18, were taken to University Hospital in critical condition, while Jamie Manning, 23, left the scene on foot and was arrested later.

Manning was treated and released from University Hospital, while Boyd and Proctor were in stable condition there with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Newark Police say the Audi driven by Boyd was used in numerous robberies and was unsuccessfully chased by police in nearby South Orange shortly before the crash.

The three survivors were arrested on suspicion of receiving stolen property and may face additional charges. No weapons were found in the wreckage.
