Deadly home invasion in Newark

NEWARK Investigators said the shooting was the result of a botched home invasion around 10:00 Sunday night at 93 Delevan Avenue.

According to a cousin, Enrique Ponce was visiting a long time friend when the home invasion happened.

Three suspects wearing masks and armed with guns banged the door, entered the home and shot Enrique in the head, police said.

The suspects demanded money, assaulted another resident, and then fled with a small amount of cash.

The trio is believed to have fled the scene in a grey auto.

Ponce wasn't married, but leaves behind a large family. He is survived by two brothers and a sister. His cousin described him as a very nice person with a charismatic personality.

His murder was the second of the year.

Police have not yet identified the suspects responsible and urge anyone with information about this or any other crime to call the Department's 24 hour Crime Stoppers anonymous tip line at 877 NWK-TIPS (877 695-8477) or NWK-GUNS (877 695-4867).

Tips leading to arrests and indictments could result in cash rewards of up to $ 2,000 to the person who provides the information or $1,000 per gun for calls into the Gun hotline.
