Bystander killed in Queens shootout

JAMAICA Authorities say three people were shot late in the afternoon during a confrontation that turned into a shootout in the Jamaica section.

Two people were killed, including one who appears to have been an innocent bystander. That victim was identified as 33-year-old Andre Saunders, from the Rockaways. Saunders worked for the MTA as a bus driver.

The second fatality has been identified as 21-years-old Lemarr Wilson. Both men killed were shot in the head. The third victim, a 17-year-old male, was shot in the leg. Authorities say Saunders, who relatives say loved to make movies, was filming a rap music video for Wilson and the teen.

It's not clear exactly what sparked the violence.

So far, no arrests have been made.

Joseph Smith, President MTA Bus Company/MTA Long Island Bus, issued the following statement:

This afternoon, the MTA Bus Company lost a valued employee, Bus Operator Andre Saunders. Saunders was off-duty when he was shot and killed this afternoon in Jamaica, Queens.

Saunders has been a Bus Operator since March 2004, when he was hired by Jamaica Bus Company, one of seven bus companies that operated under franchise granted by the NYC Department of Transportation whose operations were merged into MTA Bus between January 2005 and February 2006.

Andre, who was 33, was a dedicated, valued employee and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends and colleagues at the Baisley Park Depot.
