LONG ISLAND Police say the driver of the Honda Civic was speeding heading southbound on the Wantagh Parkway when he slammed into a tree.

The accident happened at 3:00 Monday morning just north of Merrick Road.

Three people died, including the 22-year-old driver, a 19-year-old woman and 23-year-old man.

Investigators said the driver could not negotiate a turn and lost control.

Rescue crews at the scene had the difficult job of prying the four victims from the wreckage. The sole survivor was a 19-year-old woman. She was semi-conscious at the scene.

The driver lived in Bayville with his aunt and uncle, who were visibly distraught after receiving word of the crash.

Bob Blaha identified the 22-year-old as Anthony Petillo and described him as an aspiring artist who worked two jobs at a restaurant and a deli.

Petillo was driving his aunt's Honda.

Police are investigating what caused the crash. Sources close to the investigation say there were crushed beer cans outside of the vehicle, but it's still not clear whether alcohol played a role.
