Students resume classes Tuesday following fire

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. Firefighters were still on the scene Friday morning after flames lit up the night sky.

Over 200 firefighters responded to the spectacular fire that destroyed the school.

Officials do not suspect foul play since the building was locked and secure, but said it could take weeks to determine.

Students will not be able to return to the school when it resumes this week.

Two of the three wings of the schools collapsed.

One of the firefighters on the scene is a teacher at a nearby school.

"This is home, and this is home to a lot of different type of classrooms in terms of special ed, and regular education classrooms," said Christine Manzi. "As a teacher, our world is in our room, so this is going to be hard for them as well," she adds.

The superintendent says students will resume classes Tuesday at Our Lady of Grace in West Babylon. The building is located at 666 Albin Avenue.

Teachers and administrators will report to the building on Monday, February 22nd to set up classrooms.

South Bay Elementary School students will begin classes on Tuesday, February 23rd.

There is no school for South Bay students only on Monday, February 22nd – the other four elementary schools, the junior high and the senior high schools are all open and operating according to their normal schedules.

All of the students at South Bay Elementary will be offered transportation, including the children who walked to the original building.
