Jersey City deal would avert police layoffs

JERSEY CITY, N.J.

Mayor Jerramiah Healy and police union president Jerry DeCicco issued a joint statement Tuesday saying that the executive board of the Jersey City Police Officers Benevolent Association has voted to take the proposal to the full membership.

A ratification vote is expected by early next week. Jersey City has 830 police officers.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The layoffs were to take place Feb. 15. Officials blamed the city's financial woes.

News of the agreement came the same day the City of Camden laid off 335 workers, including nearly half of its police force.
