Fmr. acting fire chief arrested for arson

PARSIPPANY, N.J.

Great and important responsibilities were entrusted to 32-year-old Jason Campbell.

He ran the Morris County Sheriff Department's program for kids interested in law enforcement. And, Campbell was Fire Chief for Parsippany's Volunteer department. A fire chief, now facing arson charges.

Gene Kuber lives across from the Ute Avenue home, that investigators say Campbell both started, and responded to last June.

"It's sad, he's a good kid, was said to be a good fireman, he's so young," he said.

Campbell is also accused of the arson that destroyed a detached garage that once stood behind this Old Bloomfield Avenue home. That belongs to the owner of a diner just blocks away.

There were other arson attempts in between, police said. Even more disturbing, prosecutors say, Campbell used one of the teens from his sheriff's program to help him set at least one fire...and the prosecutor wants to know more.
