New app for Manhattan taxi wheelchair users

NEW YORK

The chairman of the Taxi and Limousine Commission told the Wall Street Journal that the Accessible Dispatch system comes after 10 years of study on expanding access for people in wheelchairs. It was being fully launched on Friday.

The new service will use GPS data from systems of existing wheelchair-accessible taxis to alert the closest cab driver when a wheelchair user needs a ride.

Customers will be able to watch in real time as the taxis moves toward them.

The West Haven, Conn.-based Metro Taxi has a two-year contract to run the dispatch system.
