RICHMOND HILL, Queens (WABC) -- Water is spewing from a Richmond Hill, Queens, street after a gas line blew during construction.
National grid was repairing a pinhole in a high pressure gas valve on 101st Avenue just after 6 a.m. Thursday.
As crews were making repairs, the line, which was corroded, failed and damaged a water service line.
The high pressure from the gas then sent the water spewing into the air.
Vehicles parked nearby on the industrial block got covered in dirt and mud.
DEP and FDNY were on the scene making sure everyone stayed safe.
"All readings came back negative and we're just standing by until they get the hazard under control," said Dan Brown, FDNY.
"I was going to drop my son to school at around 8 o'clock, a little before 8 o'clock, and that's when I see all these cars, I hear helicopters, and there's a guy over there that told me how the gas pipe burst and it smells really bad," said Amandeep Kaur, a Richmond Hill resident. "It smells like gas, you know how if you leave gas open in the house that's the smell."
Workers are trying to add a sleeve to reduce the high pressure.
Other crews are working to stop the flow of gas so the pinhole can be repaired.
The repairs were expected to take most of the day.
