Two cats rescued during fire at tire shop in Sayreville, NJ

Fire at tire store in Sayreville started in garbage pile at house next door
The building was empty and no injuries were reported, officials said.

A fire at a tire store shut down a major road during the evening rush in New Jersey.

The fire broke out just after 3 p.m. in a Mavis Tire Store on Route 35 South in Sayreville.

Sayreville Fire Chief Rich Masterson said the adjacent house next door to the Mavis Tire Store had a garbage pile that caught fire and extended to the Mavis and resulted in the roof collapsing on the Mavis tire.

The building was empty and no injuries were reported, officials said.

Mavis Tire, the roof and the adjacent house's attached garage, four cars were also damaged in the fire, officials said.

Two cats were rescued from the apartment above Mavis by a firefighter, Masterson said.

The fire is under investigation.

Route 35 has reopened in all directions in Sayreville.
