Worker dies after fall from NJ bridge

JERSEY CITY, N.J. Jersey City police say 55-year-old Robert Fitzgerald of North Arlington was working for the CSX rail line when he fell from the Wittpenn Bridge around 4:30 a.m. Friday.

Fitzgerald made his way to some pilings but lost consciousness due to hypothermia, police said. Emergency service workers soon hoisted him to the bridge in a basket and took him to Jersey City Medical Center, where he died several hours later.

At the time of the accident, police said Fitzgerald had been on the CSX bridge near the Wittpenn, which connects Jersey City and Kearny along Route 7 in northern Jersey.

The accident remained under investigation, authorities said Saturday.
