Two students die in Rockland County car accident

ROCKLAND COUNTY The accident took place on Rt. 202 near Lake Road in Montebello.

Police say a Ford Focus driven by the two students, identified as 18-year-old Vincent Crotty and 17-year-old Chrisopher Konkowski, crossed a double yellow line and was struck by a Volvo truck.

The two students died at the scene. The driver of the truck, identified as Francisco Abarca, was uninjured.

Crotty was a standout baseball player for the Mounties, who earned all-county and all-league honors.

Konkowski, his teammate, was a versatile starter.

Both were also key members of the Suffern Blue Devils, a baseball team that was part of the the Westchester Rockland Wood Bat League. The WRWBL is an 18 and over all-wood bat baseball league serving the New York metropolitan area with teams from Westchester, Rockland, the Bronx, Manhattan and Fairfield County, Connecticut.

Both students were on their way to SUNY IT in the fall and both had promising futures that their family and friends will never get to see.

Police continue to investigate the accident.

The Ramapo Central School District issued the following statement:

"Whenever there is a tragedy of this magnitude it has a devastating impact on a school. With this loss, our condolences go out to the families of these young men. The principal has arranged for support and grief counseling for students and staff of Suffern High School during this difficult period."
