Officers say they were called about a burglary in progress.
Once they arrived, they found the suspect exiting the home.
The suspect reportedly opened fire on police, who returned fire, striking the man in the leg.
The man then ran around the corner and shot himself in the head.
A loaded 9MM Beretta was recovered at the scene.
Residents say there have been a number of break-ins in the neighborhood recently.
The incident is under investigation.
