Baby bear rambles through NJ neighborhood

SOMERVILLE, N.J.

Somerville police started getting reports about the 155-pound bruin, believed to be about 18 months old, around 9:30 a.m. It was soon spotted near a high school, and officers followed the animal in an attempt to corner it.

But the bear eventually made it to the backyard of a nearby home and climbed a tree, where a state wildlife technician shot a tranquilizer into the animal. It fell to the ground, but got up and went through two other backyards before being hit with a second tranquilizer and captured.

Wildlife officials said the bear, which wasn't injured and didn't cause any damage, would be released in a remote area of the state.
