CHICAGO -- The miracle of life played out on a street in the city's Back of the Yards neighborhood after good Samaritans heard a woman screaming and came to her aid.
It wasn't how it was supposed to happen, but it was still perfect.
"This was a blessing. For all the negative stuff that goes on over here, around here, this was truly a blessing," said Donald Robinson.
Robinson captured video of the moments right after the birth of a baby in the 5200-block of South Green Street. The mother lay on her back on the cold concrete sidewalk, her baby boy in the warm embrace of strangers.
"Oh, they ran out their houses. That's what we do on this block. We are a family over here," Robinson said.
Robinson said he was driving past the intersection of West 52nd Street and South Green Street when he encountered the woman, a complete stranger, lying on the ground and screaming in pain. Neighbor Jasmine Williams came running out to help just in time for the woman to give birth.
"And the baby came on out. And all I was thinking was, 'Cover him up.' That's why I ran to my trunk to get some coats and stuff," he said. "I ran, and I don't do no running. I ran to my car."
Paramedics arrived shortly after. Mother and son are both doing okay.
Happening just weeks before Christmas, neighbors are already calling it a "miracle on Green Street."
"A child of the block. Put the middle name as 'Green.' God sent you this way to have that baby right here for a reason," Robinson said.
There is no word yet on what the boy was named. The mother and her son are doing well at St. Bernard Hospital.
