CROTON-ON-HUDSON, New York (WABC) -- Authorities say the search for a missing swimmer in the Hudson River near Croton-On-Hudson is now a recovery mission.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino confirmed that 47-year-old Alex DeSouza, of Brooklyn, drowned in the waters off Teller's Point in Croton Point Park Tuesday morning. His body has not been recovered.

He said DeSouza and two others had rented a cabin, but since they couldn't check in yet, they decided to go fishing. After several hours in the sun, one of them decided to go for a swim, even though it is prohibited in that area due the strong current. Even though the water was not that deep, Astorino said DeSouza went under the water and did not resurface.

Police, fire and aviation units were all scouring the area for the man after his friends called 911 around 10:45 a.m.
