UPPER EAST SIDE (WABC) -- Joan Rivers apartment on the Upper East Side sold last year for 28 million dollars, but some of its contents are for sale at an auction scheduled for next week at Christie's in Manhattan and online. Items start at just a few hundred bucks, and you don't even need a dime to go to see what's for sale.
It's the stuff her dreams were made of: jewelry that she collected, furniture from her 5th Avenue penthouse and the clothes she wore on the red carpet when she asked stars
what they were wearing and wanted to know - 'can we talk?'
Is there a more iconic New York name than Joan Rivers?
"Arguably, no," Gemma Sudlow, Auction Specialist, said.
That's why Christie's auction house was showing the press around on Friday, pointing out the Tiffany bowl belonging to Joan's dog Spike and explaining she wore an Oscar de la Renta dress and cape to the Tony Awards in 1990.
"You get glitz, you get glam and you get style. And, that's what for me Joan Rivers was all about," Sudlow said.
Her Chanel bags are among the cheapest items. A piece by Fabrege could bring as much as a quarter million dollars, or more.
"We've tried to do here - working with the family, working with Melissa Rivers... We've tried to select the few, iconic pieces that really help tell the story," Sudlow explained.
Her style and how the comic chose to define it tells her fans much about the person who bought all this.
"So, whether it's the showbiz side with the sequins or it's this intellectual side with the collecting of Fabrege, all sides of her character are reflected here," Sudlow said.
Christie's auction house invites you to come this weekend and take a look even if you're not looking to buy anything here.
"It's an opportunity to step inside the world of Joan Rivers," Sudlow added.
Rivers died in 2014 at the age of 81.
