NEW YORK (WABC) -- The family of murdered NYPD Detective Miosotis Familia is talking about their loss and grief, one week after the veteran officer's funeral.

Familia was murdered on July 5th by a mentally ill career criminal as she sat in a mobile police unit in the Bronx.

Eyewitness News Reporter Lucy Yang speaks to the family in the Kingsbrige section of the Bronx.

The officer's grieving family graciously welcomed Eyewitness News into their home on Tuesday to share tears and stories, memories of their wonder woman who was gunned down while trying to protect all of us.

Two weeks later, the heart is still raw and grieving as 87-year-old Adriana Valoy suffers what no mother should, the loss of her youngest child, Det. Miosotis Familia.

"She loved the thought of being a police officer. She loved to help people and that was a passion," Valoy said.

This gracious grandmother lived with her in the Bronx, so she could help care for the officer's three children.

On July 4th, their happy three generation household was ripped in half when a gunman, unprovoked, killed the officer. She was posthumously promoted to detective.

"It's surreal right now. It's like I don't believe it. I see her picture and I see everything that's happening. I'm just, I'm just numb," said Adriana Sanchez, the detective's sister.

She was the youngest of 10 children. The jokester, who went on to become a strong mother and defender of the city.

Tuesday night, the family's foyer is filled with funeral flowers, candles and cards, all heart breaking reminders that this amazing woman with the million dollar smile and the brave heart is gone.

"She was sunshine, the best. My best friend, we spoke a lot. We're real close," said Franklin Familia, the detective's brother.

"She was a strong woman, like the wonder woman of the family. Kind of looked at her for advice," said Chris Valoy, the detective's nephew.

Familia's mother told Eyewitness News that she lost her "sunshine child," but now realizes she has gained a whole new family. The NYPD has wrapped its arms around her children.
