SMITHTOWN, N.Y. -- An intersection has reopened after a fire department SUV and a civilian vehicle crashed on Long Island.
Around 12:30 a.m., a Stonybrook Fire Department chief was driving an SUV which crashed into a civilian vehicle at the intersection of Route 347 and Route 111. The impact flipped the fire department Suburban and trapped the chief inside as well as two people inside a sedan.
The male driver and female passenger in the sedan were southbound on Route 111 when they hit the Suburban, which was eastbound. The driver and female passenger were both taken to Stony Brook University Hospital; the driver has non-life threatening injuries and the woman has serious injuries. The fire chief's condition is unknown. The intersection is open as of 5:30 a.m.
The Smithtown Fire Department worked for nearly 30 minutes to cut all of the victims out of the vehicles. The chief was airlifted to Stonybrook hospital while the two other victims were rushed by ambulance.
Suffolk County Police Department officials investigated the scene.
