THOMPSON, N.Y. (WABC) -- One person was killed and five others injured in a multi-vehicle accident early Tuesday in the town of Thompson in Sullivan County.

State police say the crash at about 3:15 a.m. involved five tractor trailers and two passenger cars, all traveling in a westbound direction on Route 17, just west of exit 110.

The driver of one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four of the injured were taken by ambulance to Catskill Regional Medical Center and one was transported to Orange Regional Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.

Three of the tractor trailers were overturned.

State Route 17 remained closed for several hours during the investigation.

Icing conditions on the roadway appeared to be a contributing factor, causing vehicles to lose control as they attempted to negotiate a downward grade in the roadway, authorities said.
