ACCUWEATHER ALERT: Heavy rain brings threat of flash flooding

NEW YORK (WABC) -- The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for New York City and the Tri-State area through Tuesday afternoon.

Showers and thunderstorms associated with a warm front were producing heavy rain Tuesday morning, AccuWeather says. Local amounts as high as 3 inches and hourly rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour can be expected.

In New Jersey, 4,727 were without power and on Long Island, about 1,500 had power outages.

LaGuardia and Kennedy airports had one-hour delays. Newark airport had 90-minute delays.

In Douglaston, Queens, the fire department responded after a tree fell down on 54th Avenue. No one was injured.

AccuWeather said the heaviest rain was expected in the city between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m., having a disruptive impact on the morning commute and lasting through about midday. There were 10-minute delays on th Long Island Rail Road Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma lines in both directions due to water east of Westbury Station.

Despite dry conditions, some small streams in Northeast New Jersey could approach bank full if directly impacted. Larger streams and main stem rivers should not experience flooding.

The National Weather Service said a flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding creates a very dangerous situation.
