Hit & run driver suspect presumed dead

The suspect jumped into the Passaic River in Newark
NEWARK Diver crews were seen leaving the scene this morning -- that may be an indication into how the recovery effort is going.

Police say this all started around 2 a.m. with a hit-and-run. The driver allegedly struck a pedestrian and kept on going. He then proceeded to ditch his car and then continue to flee, by jumping into the Passaic River.

Officials say he went under the water and never came up. Police believe he has likely drowned after divers spent much of the morning in the water.

Police were conducting a rescue then a recovery operation.

As for the pedestrian that was struck, he is a 32-year-old man. He was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries to his legs. --- Eyewitness News reporter Jaime Roth, Web produced by Lakisha Bostick
