Report: Lawmakers aid Rutgers athletics

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Star-Ledger of Newark reports that Trenton lawmakers have approved $2.25 million in grants so far by tacking on earmarks to the state budget.

Documents obtained by the newspaper under the Open Public Records Act reportedly show the money being channeled directly to the athletics department and the university's football team.

The grants have been kept separate from the school's annual aid package.

Critics tell the newspaper there is nothing illegal about the grants but they seem to have been kept out of the public eye.

Rutgers officials did not immediately return a call for comment.
