Death of infant labeled suspicious

NEWARK The Newark Police Department's Homicide Squad, in conjunction with the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, is in the very early stages of a joint investigation into the death of the girl at 13 Cutler Street.

Authorities say that shortly before 1 p.m., police responded to the scene on a report of a child in cardiac arrest.

The infant was transported to UMDNJ, where she was pronounced dead a short time later.

An autopsy was to be performed, but Newark police spokesman Todd McClendon says the preliminary findings suggest foul play. No charges have been filed, but police are interviewing people who lived in the home.

The 2-year-old sibling of the infant has been evaluated by doctors as a precaution.

Authorities say physicians at University Hospital found him to be in good condition.

McClendon says the Division of Youth and Family Services will likely conduct its own investigation to determine whether the 2-year-old can remain in the home.
