Coach allegedly rewards athlete with alcohol

Police say a Long Island gymnastics coach has been arrested and fired after giving a 14-year-old student a bottle of rum, apparently as a reward for nailing a difficult maneuver. The girl was hospitalized after drinking it. Suffolk County police say Steven Lamensdorf has been released on $500 bond after his arrest Tuesday on charges of child endangerment and unlawfully dealing with a child.

Police say the 22-year-old gave the teenager the Malibu rum on Friday. She has since been treated and released from a hospital.

Police say Spins Gymnastics Academy, in Port Jefferson, fired Lamensdorf over the incident.

Telephone messages left at the academy and Lamensdorf's Mount Sinai home Tuesday evening haven't immediately been returned.

Police aren't sure whether he has a lawyer.
