Body recovered off Queens beach

FAR ROCKAWAY The body, apparently of a man, was found near Beach 14th Street just before 10:30 a.m. Monday.

Authorities suspect it is the body of 35-year-old Ramon Figero, who disappeared in the waters of the East Rockaway Inlet Saturday morning.

Figero was last seen Saturday trying to rescue a woman who nearly drowned. The woman, 24-year-old Daria Miranda, went to the beach in the Rockaways on Saturday with Figero and another friend before lifeguards were on duty. Figero was waist deep in the water when Miranda was sucked into a current. He dived after her and disappeared. A passing boat rescued Miranda.

The Medical Examiner will have to positively identify the body.

NYPD divers and aviation spent all day Saturday and Sunday searching for the body.

Rescue crews from Coast Guard Station Jones Beach and Nassau Police Aviation Bureau searched near the Atlantic Beach Bridge.

The water temperature was 59 degrees, with a 2- to 3-foot surf.
