Explosion levels house in Clifton

CLIFTON, N.J.

The blast happened at 64 Rutgers Place around 1:30 p.m.

Officials said the three bedroom home was under contract. It was undergoing soil remediation for an old oil tank in the front yard.

It was supposed be the first home for a man named Gilberto and his wife.

He said the explosion threw him and two others off their feet.

"I ran and then we were thrown," he said. "We're lucky to be alive."

Pieces of the roof are now in the trees. The front door was blown clear across the street.

He is still shaken after what was to become his home is gone.

Gilberto has been excited about moving into the house and celebrate his 23rd wedding anniversary with his wife. It's just two weeks away.

"I love my wife. We'll be fine," he said, choking back tears.

Five people suffered injuries, but fortunately they will be okay.

Investigators believe the workers hit a natural gas line, sparking the blast.
