Fire races through building in Queens

Four alarm fire in Astoria, Queens on Tuesday, March 29, 2011 (FDNY)

Firefighters battled flames and heavy smoke at a four-alarmer at a restaurant and apartment building.

Flames ripped through the 30th Avenue building in the Astoria section of Queens shortly after 7:00 a.m.

The building houses a restaurant on the ground floor and apartments above.

Heavy smoke poured from the building.

Fifteen firefighters and one civilian have been injured, officials said.

Local buses were detoured in the area of 30th Avenue and Steinway Street.

Police called a localized mobilization of officers for crowd control.

The fire burned for more than four hours before being brought under control around 11:30.
