Work has begun Monday to close the breaches on Long Island Barrier Islands caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that New York has signed contracts with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which hired contractors to begin work immediately at Smith Point County Park and Cupsogue County Park in Suffolk County.

Crews will use 200,000 cubic yards of sand to fill the holes.

There is another breach at Fire Island that is still being evaluated.
