Firefighters battle flames, cold in Glendale fire

NEW YORK

The fire burned through the house just before 1:45 a.m.

Fire marshals determined that a man in his 70s was smoking in bed and fell asleep.

His son, who was in a different part of the house, was awakened by the sound of a smoke alarm and was able to help his father escape the building before the fire progressed.

Firefighters battled the flames and the frigid cold, facing freezing conditions with all the water they poured onto the blaze.
