Teachers are now being told to get students active for at least five minutes in every class, and the program kicked off Friday.

The new initiative is called "March Forward".

"For 5 minutes each period we do some type of physical exercise," said Alexander.

The goal is to get kids up and moving as research shows it improves learning.

"Children who are physically fit and more active do better in school do better in school so we have a win win," said Carrie Steindorff with Rockland County Department of Health.

Steindorff says they're testing the program in schools throughout Rockland County.

It only takes a few minutes to get the blood pumpin. The teachers are given creative freedom. One teacher, Joan Spira's incorporating math into the exercise.

"It definitely helped them focus the negative is not everybodys into it at first," she said.
