The fire broke out inside Sims Metal Management on Linden Avenue just after 11 p.m. Monday, sending huge plumes of smoke into the air, with flames that were visible for miles.
Firefighters battled the blaze from land and from a marine vessel, and crews in claw cranes were moving debris out of the way in an effort to aid the fight.
Firefighters contained the flames to a mound of metal about 30 feet high and 100 feet wide. The flames were finally brought under control after burning for about 10 hours.
No injuries were reported.
The complex one of the world's largest recycling plants. The plant recycles 4,000 tons of scrap each day.
Firefighters maintained a one alarm assignment because there was no danger the fire would spread to neighboring structures.
The fire was just south of the Liberty National Golf Course, which is hosting the Barclays golf tournament this week. Smoke from the fire did not immediately affect a practice round for professionals.
