The road was closed off by police tape, as detectives try to determine what went on inside the gas station around 5 a.m.
Detectives say a customer came into the store and found the clerk, a 50-year-old man from Valley Stream, dead on the floor.
They say they can't yet determine if the clerk fell victim to a robbery or what the motive was, but say it was a violent murder that's shaken this community.
"I'm not going into detail but the door was opened by a customer, who found the victim who appeared to be injured called 911," said Det Sgt Tony Repalone.
Witnesses who say they know the victim, and he worked the overnight shift.
Detectives say there were two 911 calls and they are looking into who made the first. The second was made by the customer who discovered the victim dead in the aisle.
