The Department of Defense has implemented this policy change, because the battlefield has changed. In a statement issued by the DOD, "The modern-day battlefield is non-linear and fluid, with no clearly defined front line or safer rear area."
Now that women can be assigned to any area of the battlefield, as many as 14,325 positions are now open to them.
