ABC News projects Gillen wins NY's 4th Congressional District

Democrat Laura Gillen won election to a U.S. House seat representing New York on Thursday, defeating Republican Rep. Anthony D'Esposito, ABC News has projected.

Gillen is a former town supervisor who campaigned on supporting law enforcement and border security, an issue many Democrats blame for their losses in New York in 2022.

Gillen was one of several Democrats running against a New York Republican congressman in a district that Democrat Joe Biden carried in 2020.

The district falls just outside the New York City borough of Queens.

Trump flips 5 counties from blue to red in New Jersey

The once deep blue state of New Jersey is not the Democratic stronghold it used to be as Kamala Harris won the state by just a five-point margin.

Donald Trump also managed to flip five counties -- including Morris and Passaic -- from blue to red.

Gov. Phil Murphy said it proves it is a challenge for a woman to win a national election, but he said he is determined to do all he can to fight against any policies the Trump administration may push that would hurt residents.

Anthony Johnson has the story:

Trump breaks 30% in NYC

While NYC residents still voted for Kamala Harris by a more than 2-1 margin, Donald Trump managed to break the 30% threshold -- his most support in the five boroughs yet.

Trump turnout is getting stronger in eastern Bronx, western and eastern Queens, southern Brooklyn neighborhoods like Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst and Staten Island.

Trump won 23% of the vote in the five boroughs in 2020, an improvement from his 2016 turnout of 18%.

Rep. Mike Lawler projected to win reelection

Republican Rep. Mike Lawler won reelection over Democrat Mondaire Jones, who once held the NY-17 seat, ABC News projects.

Lawler is one of several Republicans who flipped traditionally Democratic New York districts in 2022.

The 17th District contains the northern part of wealthy Westchester County and extends north and west to include suburban Rockland County and the Hudson Valley's Putnam County.

Jones lost the seat after redistricting in 2022.
