Key races to watch in New York

Republicans flipped four New York House districts in their favor in 2022, and now will attempt to hold those seats in a presidential election year. Democrats have prioritized regaining control of the House, and cannot without retaking several New York seats.

New York is a Democratic-leaning state, but it is still a major priority for Republicans on Election Day.

Half a dozen U.S. House races in New York have become highly competitive, making it a key state in the race to control the chamber.

Chantee Lans has the latest on the key Long Island congressional races.

Key races to watch in New Jersey

After a dramatic primary, New Jersey voters turn to the Nov. 5 general election to resolve several races for federal offices up and down the state.

In the U.S. Senate race, Democratic U.S. Rep. Andy Kim and Republican Curtis Bashaw are vying to fill the open seat that former Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez vacated following his conviction on bribery charges. Kim is a three-term congressman from the 3rd District, and Bashaw is a hotel developer and first-time candidate from southern New Jersey. Four independent candidates also are on the ballot.

Since 2000, Democrats have had an average margin of victory of about 12 points in New Jersey's U.S. Senate elections. The last two New Jersey Republicans to serve in the U.S. Senate were both appointed to the position and served only a few months each. New Jersey's most recent elected Republican senator left office in 1979.

Among the U.S. House races of interest is the 7th District seat that includes Trump's Bedminster golf club. Republican Tom Kean Jr. is seeking a second term against Democrat Sue Altman, a former leader of the state's progressive Working Families Alliance. Kean is the son, grandson and great-grandson of former New Jersey elected officials. In the 8th District, Democrat Rob Menendez, son of the recently resigned senator, is seeking a second term against Republican Anthony Valdes.

Key races to watch:

Senate - Democrat Andy Kim vs Republican Curtis Bashaw

NJ-7 -- Incumbent Republican Tom Kean Jr vs Democrat Sue Altman

NJ-8 -- Incumbent Democrat Robert Menendez vs Republican Anthony Valdes

NJ-9 -- Nellie Pou vs Billy Prempeh

NJ-10 -- Incumbent Democrat LaMonica McIver vs Republican Carmen Bucco

New York key ballot measure: Prop 1

When New Yorkers vote for president, Senate, Congress and the legislature in Albany, the opposite side of the ballot will contain six different questions -- including one that could amend the state's constitution.

Proposition 1 seeks to update the state's Equal Rights Amendment to include new protected classes that include "pregnancy, pregnancy outcomes and reproductive health care and autonomy."

And while it's not specifically mentioned, the measure would effectively preserve the right to an abortion across New York.
