Persons of interest identified in murder of livery cab driver in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn

BEDFORD-STUYVESANT (WABC) -- Police have identified two persons of interest in the fatal shooting of a livery cab driver in Brooklyn.

One of them is 23-year old Unique Gray, described by police as a gang member seen on video with a .38 caliber gun in his hand.

"We are looking at him for a total of three cab robberies right now," said NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce. "He is identified in this one and another one just blocks away, two days earlier. He just got out of jail on parole for robbery on May 1. He has 15 prior arrests."

Boyce said Gray has distinctive tattooing in and around his collarbone.

One person was identified from DNA on a shirt left in the livery car following the Bedford Stuyvesant murder early Monday morning.

Detectives are now looking for both for questioning.

Monday morning, just after midnight, police said 35-year-old Naji Fawaz was shot during a robbery while driving his livery cab on Decatur Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Two suspects were seen running away from the crime scene.

"We feel sad, we feel very, very sad, it's emotional, you know," said Youssef Moussaid, a coworker, after the shooting.

Fawaz was an immigrant from Yemen, and talked about was how to work extra hours to make more money so he could take care of his wife and four kids. Police said he was shot and killed by two men who wanted cash. But police said he didn't have any on him.

His Toyota Camry continued to roll down the street after Fawaz was struck, witnesses said, ultimately hitting another parked car.

Neighbors said Fawaz was shot just blocks away from his home.

"This kind of job always has its risk," Moussaid said.

A licensed livery cab driver for less than two years, Fawaz had been driving for Adams Express for the last month. Fawaz was struck in his torso, right shoulder and his neck.

"We think we will make an arrest on this based on the amount of forensics in the car. We don't know right know if it's a street hail or a call in but we will find that out," police said.
