"Would I have been friends with my parents if I had grown up with them?"
That's the question Danielle Delph was pondering when she came up with the idea to visually insert herself into her mom's childhood. In addition to being a wonderful surprise for her mom, she thinks these photos are an answer to her question.
"After seeing myself in her childhood photos, I'm pretty sure we would have been great friends," she writes on her website.
Delph, an art director in Oregon, said in an email that the hardest part of fusing her childhood with her mother's was finding photos that could work together.
"I spent about 6 months searching for right images," she said, adding that she mainly went through her mom's old family photos from the 1960s and 1970s and her own photos from the 1990s and 2000s.
The rest was history...and also plenty of photoshop.
Delph shared before-and-after photos for each young woman before her homecoming dance, which Delph says is her mom's favorite image. Looking at these images, you can see all the photo editing that went into her project.

And how did her mom react to the images?
One day, Delph tagged her mom on Facebook in a post with the photos. She hadn't known about the project before that, so it was quite the surprise, Delph said.
"She loved it. Found it really touching," she said. "It made her cry when she first saw it and she says she goes to the site every day, which she now calls 'our site.' She thinks that we truly could have been friends."
