LOS ANGELES -- Stars graced the 95th Oscars red carpet, which -- for the first time since 1961 -- is not red.

The academy rolled out a surprise champagne-colored carpet Wednesday for the 2023 ceremony, airing live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The decision to change the color came from creative consultants Lisa Love, a longtime Vogue contributor, and Raúl vila, the creative director for the Met Gala who wanted to turn a "day event into night."

Rihanna helped close down the carpet in a black leathery look with a train that accentuated her baby bump, while Lady Gaga picked Versace from the fashion house's recent Los Angeles show. Cate Blanchett wore a black look with a never-before-seen drape velvet blue top from the Louis Vuitton archives.

Then there was an unforgettable look from Florence Pugh, who wore a stunning Valentino ensemble that included black shorts

Actor Harvey Guillen arrived with a black matador-inspired jacket, while Marvel star and Oscar presenter Elizabeth Olsen sported a sparkly gun-metal black gown with a plunging neckline and slicked-back hair. Activist Malala Yousafzai also sparkled head-to-toe in her glamorous gown, and Ariana Debose created a moment with her jewel-encrusted gown.

White and cream gowns -- wore by stars like Zoe Saldana, Mindy Kaling, Sophia Carson and Halle Berry -- also complimented the newly lightly colored carpet.

Carson was a princess in white custom Giambattista Valli haute couture, a stunning statement diamond and emerald necklace accenting her ball gown with its off-shoulder, form-fitting bodice, a delicate diamond-shaped cutout at the center. Her jewels were by Chopard, including 122.49 carats of emeralds and 92.57 carats of diamonds.

Also looking royal was Angela Bassett in Moschino. The look by Jeremy Scott included draping that looked like a huge bow up top as the fabric swirled around her body. She was perfectly accented with a serpent necklace

From Cher's sheer Bob Mackie dress to Billy Porter's tuxedo gown, stars have brought unforgettable looks to the Oscars red carpet for decades.

At last year's Oscars, pastels were a red carpet hit, while reds also took it in the trend department. Some stars used ribbons to show their support for Ukraine, with worldwide attention on the war-torn nation one month after Russia's invasion.
