Prosecutors say 41-year-old Carlo Taccetta, of Whippany, is a soldier in the Lucchese crime family.
New Jersey state troopers say they found 65 pounds of marijuana in Taccetta's pickup truck during a stop in Montville on Saturday.
Authorities say an ongoing investigation led troopers to stop the pickup truck, and Taccetta granted troopers permission to search his vehicle. Further details on the investigation were not disclosed.
His father, Michael Taccetta, is a suspected capo in the same crime family.
The case will be prosecuted by the state's Criminal Justice division.
He is being held on $75,000 bail.
