More vaccine sites close in NYC and around the country as demand withers; CDC panel to meet

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) -- The demand for COVID vaccines continues to wither in New York City and around the country, as the state continues to close more mass vaccination sites.

You can no longer get your vaccine under the big blue whale at the American Museum of National History, though vaccines will still be administered in Gallery 77 on the first floor.

Walk-ins are still accepted and encouraged, and a dedicated viewing area has been established for the newly vaccinated on the mezzanine level of the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life.

You can also get vaccinated at a number of state-run and city-run vaccination sites.

After months of decline amid soaring vaccination rates, coronavirus cases are once again on the rise in the Tri-State area.

Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the city will host "five atomic extraordinary concerts, once in each borough" for the city's Homecoming Week next month

The concerts are scheduled for Central Park, Orchard Beach in the Bronx, Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, Brooklyn Army Terminal in Brooklyn, and Richmond County Bank Park on Staten Island.

"You should get to New York City in the month of August for amazing things that will be happening during homecoming week," he said. "Don't let that FOMO thing happen to you. This is going to be amazing."

The mayor said the city can hosts events like Homecoming Week because 70% of adults have received a vaccine shot

"We've got more to do with younger New Yorkers," he said.
