Four-alarm fire destroys stores in Queens

QUEENS The four-alarm fire left the row of Rego Park stores in ruin.

The first call for the fire came in around 8 p.m. Sunday. It quickly went to four alarms, devastating the string of stores along 99th Street at 66th Avenue.

The flames moved so fast that the first firefighters to push in on the fire were pushed right back out to the street.

Four stores were destroyed.

The fire got so close to the Ohr Natan Synagogue that people rushed to save the Torahs and other items.

The rabbi and his congregation prayed on the street that his synagogue would be spared.

Except for some smoke damage, it appears their prayers were answered.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

No injuries were reported.
