New York City subway crime spikes

NEW YORK

Officials say 1,000 subway riders have been victims of larceny this year through August. That's a jump from 787 during the same period in 2010.

The spike in thefts has caused subway crime to rise overall by 17 percent from last year.

Owen Monaghan, an assistant chief with the NYPD's Transit Bureau, says 46 percent of all underground crime occurs on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

As a result, extra undercover police officers have been dispatched to the subway system.
