Five shot and wounded in Queens

Police: 5 shot and wounded on busy Queens street
NEW YORK One of the victims is in critical condition, according to an Elmhurst Hospital spokeswoman. Two others are in stable condition, and another two suffered graze wounds and were treated and released.

The five were gunned down on Roosevelt Avenue in the Jackson Heights neighborhood. Witnesses said the shooting caused a stampede on the busy street. Apparently one person was the intended target, and the other four victims were bystanders, police said.

Hugo Calle, the manager of a neighborhood beauty salon, ran out on the street after hearing the shots and saw the five victims lying on the pavement in a pool of blood. Calle said four men and a woman were shot.

Residents were gathered at police blockades as authorities investigated the scene after the shooting.
