Three fiery and deadly accidents on Long Island involving Jeep Grand Cherokees have sparked a federal investigation to examine the safety of the SUVs.

The crashes prompted the government to investigate the location of the fuel tank on millions of vehicles made between 1993 and 2004.

Inspectors are determining if the gas tanks tend to burst and catch fire in crashes.

At least 55 people have died in 44 crashes involving the vehicles.
