Father, son rescued from deep marsh mud

CROTON-ON-HUDON, N.Y.

Authorities reached the duo around 3:40 p.m. Friday in Croton Point Park, where they had gotten stuck in a marsh. Mud had reached almost to the waist of the 34-year-old father from Peekskill, N.Y., and above the waist of his 6-year-old son.

Rescuers had planned to attempt a rescue from the shore, but were blocked by mud, reeds and the remote location. A helicopter had to be called in, and the craft hovered over the pair as an officer pulled them out.

The father and son were taken to an area hospital for observation.
