Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel to fully reopen

NEW YORK

Trucks are still barred from using the tunnel until further notice.

One tube was reopened to buses on Nov. 12 and cars on Nov. 13. Use of that tube was limited to peak morning and afternoon drive times.

"While some off-peak closures may be necessary to continue making repairs, the good news is that this critical link between Brooklyn, Staten Island and lower Manhattan will once again be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week," Governor Cuomo said.

The Carey Tunnel was flooded with corrosive, debris-laden seawater in each of its two tubes, causing wide-ranging damage to the tunnel's electrical, lighting, communications, surveillance and ventilation systems.

The tunnel is the longest vehicular under-river crossing in North America, and water flooded more than a mile of its 9,000-foot length.
