Mental health boost in Obama 2014 budget

WASHINGTON, D.C.; April 10, 2013

And under the president's proposed budget for 2014, they'll get it.

In the wake of the Sandy Hook school tragedy, the president wants a $130-million initiative to expand mental health services.

$55 million of that would help school districts identify students with mental health problems, and make sure they get care.

There would also be another $30 million to track and prevent gun violence

The Food & Drug Administration would get an additional 821 million dollars to boost food and imported drug safety.

However, Medicare would be cut $400 Billion over 10 years by enacting reforms to increase efficiency. Those costs are said to be covered by the new healthcare law.

The budget does include $31 billion for the National Institutes of Health, and fulfills a government promise to increase research into Alzheimer's disease.
